Why I Started Maaya Care

“I know what it feels like to rely on support—and how much it matters when that support is done right.”

My Story — Yasu

I was born in Nepal after my family was displaced from Bhutan in the 1990s.

Growing up, life wasn’t structured. But one thing was always clear.

Community was everything.

Community was everything. From a very early age, I understood that no one can truly move forward alone. At 10 years old, I came to Australia without knowing a word of English. Everything felt unfamiliar. The language, the system, the culture. But what helped me find my way was not just determination.

It was people.

Teachers who were patient.

Community workers who showed up.

Support systems that genuinely cared.

That experience stayed with me. The right support can change the direction of someone’s life. As I grew older, I found myself naturally drawn to giving back. I volunteered, stayed involved in community work, and eventually entered the disability sector.

Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting individuals and families from diverse cultural backgrounds. But I also saw where things were not working.

Support was often delivered. But it was not always felt. Services were provided. But they were not always understood. Too many people were left navigating systems that did not truly see them.

That's why I created Maaya Care.

Not to be the biggest provider. Not to claim that we are perfect. But to build something that feels different. Support that is personal, culturally aware, and genuinely human. I believe in taking the time to listen, to understand your story, and to work alongside you in a way that fits your life.

Because this has never just been work for me. It is something I have lived, experienced, and carry with me every day.
